When people search for a place to live, they often consider factors like affordability, job opportunities, and more. But where can they find the best options?

A recent study by Opendoor Technologies Inc. revealed the hottest ZIP codes in the country for home sales. McKinney's 75071 ranked 12th on the company's annual list of the top 20 most popular locations for housing.

Why McKinney Is Popular 

McKinney has gained popularity for several reasons, making it a sought-after location for families, professionals and businesses.

  • Quality of Life
    McKinney's lively downtown boasts a variety of unique shops, restaurants and events, maintaining its charming small-town atmosphere. Situated just north of Dallas, McKinney provides easy access to urban amenities while maintaining a suburban feel, making it an ideal spot for commuters.

  • Affordability
    While home prices have risen, McKinney still offers more affordable housing options compared to other cities in North Texas. The city is also continuing to build additional apartments and mixed-use development communities.

    McKinney is home to constantly growing industries like healthcare, technology and manufacturing. Its proximity to major employment hubs in Dallas and Plano is another advantage.

McKinney Continues To Grow

As Local Profile previously reported, in January 2024, the McKinney Planning Department recently released its population estimate, revealing nearly 215,000 residents in the city — marking a 1.6% increase since January 2023. The estimate places McKinney's population at 214,810, with a median household income of $113,286 and a workplace population of 66,851.

McKinney isn’t the only city experiencing growth. As previously reported by Local Profile, Collin County’s population is projected to double by 2060, reaching approximately 2.4 million residents.

Data from the Texas Demographic Center reveals significant growth in nearby cities since 2020: Anna saw a 52% increase, Celina 97%, Melissa 51%, Princeton 55% and Van Alstyne 51%. By 2060, Collin County’s population is expected to reach 2,438,008.
