Plano’s very own Mohammad Alqawasmi is making a name for himself on the global gelato stage. The gelato artisan from Bazaria Sweets & Ice Cream earned third place at the 2025 Gelato Festival World Masters in St. Louis, securing a spot in the North American semifinals.
Alqawasmi’s "fig krokan" – a rich almond gelato with caramelized figs and almond pieces – was a standout in the competition, which attracted top gelato chefs from across the U.S. While he didn't take the top prize, his performance showcased the skill and creativity behind his work. It's no wonder that Bazaria’s unique Middle Eastern-inspired offerings have earned local and regional recognition.
A Sweet Victory For Plano
Alqawasmi’s achievement is a notable moment for Plano's dessert scene. Fig Krokan was evaluated based on flavor, structure, creativity and presentation, all of which were masterfully executed. As a result, he now moves on to the semifinals, where he’ll have the chance to compete for a place in the global finals.

The competition was fierce, with other artisans from around the country showcasing their own inventive flavors. First place went to Tassia Vicentin Rezende of Tre Cuori Gelateria & Açaí in Ellisville, Missouri, with her "arachidi" flavor, a delightful mix of peanut butter, crunchy peanuts, dulce de leche and Belgian chocolate. Karyn Pumphrey of Gelato Queen in Monroe, Georgia, took second place with her caramel apple bourbon gelato, combining the flavors of caramel bourbon gelato with apple pie and toasted pecan.
