Scams are everywhere — texts, emails, phone calls — you name it, fraudsters are at work. But one Plano Police Department detective is on a mission to shut them down.
Detective Fisher of the Plano Police Department was recently honored with the prestigious Meritorious Service Award, recognizing outstanding dedication and excellence in service.
Stopping Scams One Shop At A Time
In a recent investigation, Plano Police Department Detective J. Fisher identified a troubling pattern of fraud cases in Plano, where victims were directed to a specific cryptocurrency ATM. Recognizing the trend, he reached out to the business managing the machine, educating the manager on red flags commonly associated with scams. He also provided his contact information for any immediate concerns.
Less than 48 hours later, the manager noticed an elderly woman holding a large amount of cash while appearing to be on the phone — a major warning sign.
The Shopkeeper’s Quick Thinking
Recalling Detective Fisher’s guidance, he quickly alerted on-duty patrol officers and the detective himself. Responding swiftly, the team reached the woman just in time, preventing her from losing approximately $13,000. Thanks to Detective Fisher’s proactive approach and the manager’s vigilance, a potential scam was thwarted.
“This incident exemplifies Detective Fisher’s exceptional commitment to serving the citizens of Plano and protecting them from victimization,” Plano Police said in a Facebook post. “By taking the time to educate the manager and provide his contact information, Detective Fisher saved the victim a far more significant financial loss.”
Plano Police Are Keeping The City Safe And Making History
But Detective Fisher isn’t the only Plano Police Officer hard at work. The Plano Police Department recently celebrated a historic milestone — a dramatic drop in citywide crime, reaching its lowest levels since tracking began in 1993.
Police previously told Local Profile, one way the department is keeping the community safe is collaboration with the public. To ensure the safety of an expanding population, the department emphasizes continued community involvement. Public education — like what was seen in this incident — plays a key role in informing residents about safety practices and crime prevention, empowering them to take an active role in maintaining a secure environment.
