Since 2006, Collin County Adventure Camp has been a destination for students, families and organizations seeking outdoor education, summer camp fun and group programs. The camp, a partnership between Collin County and the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, has served as a place for learning and adventure. However, that chapter is coming to an end.
Collin County Adventure Camp in Anna recently announced that the camp will be closing this year ahead of summer programs.
Why It’s Closing
According to Vice President of Operations at the Moody Family YMCA Nick Echtenkamp, the YMCA and Collin County mutually agreed to discontinue operations at the camp effective May 29, 2025. The decision comes as both organizations adapt to changing needs in the community as attendance falls post-Covid.
"In recent years, Collin County Adventure Camp has seen a shift in attendance, with demand transitioning from overnight camp experiences to day programs for local schools that have reduced their participation in overnight trips," Echtenkamp told Local Profile. "While this was a mutual decision for the county and the Y, it is never easy."
What Families And YMCA Visitors Can Expect

The YMCA has already begun notifying summer campers and booked groups about the closure, encouraging families to explore other YMCA camp opportunities. Among the options is Camp Grady Spruce in Graford, an overnight camp located on Possum Kingdom Lake, where campers ages 7 to 16 can explore and learn about the outdoors.
Despite the closure, the YMCA will continue to serve the Collin County community through continued school programming. The YMCA will still offer day camps at Rattan Elementary and afterschool care at four Anna ISD schools.
The YMCA also intends to reassign its seven full-time and 40 part-time counselors to new positions within the organization.
The Future Of The Property
The future of the 400-acre site at 1180 W Houston St. remains unclear, as the county has yet to determine its next steps.
