North Texas is the fastest-growing region in the country, bringing in more residents, more businesses and more money. Population estimates show that Collin County saw the largest population growth out of all seven counties in North Texas from 2016 to 2021.

In 2023, Texas led the nation in population growth. State-to-state migration flow data shows that the top five states new Texas residents are moving from include California at the top, with Texas as the number one destination for residents leaving the state. Following next are Florida, Louisiana, Georgia and Illinois which combined added 113,707 new residents to the Lone Star state in 2019.

By the year 2060, Collin County alone is expected to double its population. But why are folks moving to North Texas so rapidly?

Booming Business

Currently, 25 Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but many are situated outside of Dallas itself, opting for cities like Plano, Frisco, Irving and McKinney. As companies like AT&T, Southwest Airlines, Toyota, Intuit and Globe Life expand their operations, corporate opportunities are increasingly found in these suburbs. This shift allows more individuals to consider relocating to smaller, family-friendly communities.

Family-Friendly

As young professionals grow older, starting families has become a key focus. When choosing where to settle down, parents prioritize factors like schools, neighborhoods and safety. A few suburbs are particularly noteworthy in this regard.

According to a report from Niche, thirty Texas suburbs have been identified as premier residential areas, with six located in Collin County. For instance, Frisco boasts a median household income of $144,567 and is home to outstanding schools like Liberty High School, ranked #1 in the county. Meanwhile, Plano, with a population of 284,948 and a median household income of $105,679, offers a range of amenities and excellent schools, including Plano East Senior High School, ranked #2 in Collin County.

Safety First

With the family-friendly aspect of North Texas, comes the importance of safety. According to a report from SafeWise, Texans are more apprehensive about safety than the national average.

Melissa emerged as the safest city in the Lone Star State for 2024. The city, with its population of 20,071, stands out with remarkably low crime rates of only 0.2 incidents of violent crime and 3.2 incidents of property crime per 1,000 people in 2024.

Looking Forward

Cities in North Texas are showing their dedication to not only providing high-quality amenities, but high-quality developments and investments for the future.

In Frisco, for example, the addition of the PGA and the upcoming Fields development are proof of what the city is willing to offer its residents. In Plano, Legacy West is a one-stop shop for everything a resident could want. And soon, coming to McKinney, a 20,000-seat amphitheater promises to bring big-name artists and an influx of money from visitors to the county.

North Texas cities such as these have become a model for not only what folks look for when moving, but what other cities aim to be.
