Two mosquito pools in Frisco, Texas, have tested positive for the West Nile virus (WNV), prompting the city to initiate overnight ground spraying on Aug. 24 and 25.
The spraying, starting at 9 p.m. and ending at 5 a.m. each night, will cover areas in the Lone Star Ranch and Creekside at Preston neighborhoods. This marks Frisco's fourth positive mosquito pool this season, though no human cases have been reported.
The affected areas include Lone Star Ranch, Phillips Creek Ranch, Creekside at Preston, Panther Creek Estates and Dominion at Panther Creek. Frisco residents are urged to take precautions recommended by the Texas Department of State Health Services, summarized as "wear, apply and remove:" wear long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk, apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus and remove standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
Frisco’s mosquito control efforts are part of the city’s mosquito surveillance and response plan, which runs from May 1 through Nov. 15. Further information, including maps of the spraying areas, can be found on the city’s website at Friscotexas.gov/Mosquitoes.
This increase in West Nile virus activity is not unique to Frisco. As previously reported by Local Profile, neighboring cities, including McKinney, will also conduct mosquito control spraying from Aug. 26 to 30 in response to positive mosquito pools. The spraying will occur nightly, covering a one-mile radius around the identified areas.
