Demonstrating their skill and dedication, the Plano Police Explorer Post #911 excelled at the Singley Academy David Paris Memorial Explorer Competition in Irving, Texas, on May 18, 2024. Out of approximately 25 competing teams, the Plano Explorers clinched second place overall, marking a significant achievement for the group.
The Explorers showcased their abilities across four categories during the competition, securing commendable placements. They took third place in traffic stops and second place in arrest, search and seizure, domestic disturbance and burglary in progress.
“We are extremely proud of our Explorer’s achievements and a big thank you to all of our advisors who continue to help train these young men and women on a weekly basis,” read a Facebook post shared by the Plano Texas Police Department.
The Plano Police Explorers' success underscores the effectiveness of their training regimen, which involves dedicated Monday night meetings and independent study sessions. Under the guidance of sworn and public safety officers serving as advisers, the Explorers, young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20, participate voluntarily in the program, part of the Boys Scouts of America's "Learning for Life" initiative.
According to the Plano Texas Police Department, the Explorer program aims to familiarize young adults with the intricacies of law enforcement while fostering community engagement, leadership skills and civic responsibility. Before embarking on the basic explorer training program, applicants undergo a rigorous selection process, including background checks and structured interviews.
In addition to their competitive endeavors, Explorers actively participate in various community events and initiatives, ranging from fundraisers to safety fairs. They also benefit from opportunities such as the ride-along program, which allows them to shadow officers during field operations, gaining firsthand insight into law enforcement practices.
