Plano, Frisco, Allen And McKinney Schools Preemptively Close Ahead Of Storms

A winter storm is bringing snow to North Texas, prompting several school districts to announce closures to ensure student and staff safety. Gusty winds and freezing temperatures will exacerbate the situation, with wind chills dipping into the single digits. 

Many districts have already canceled classes, with more likely to follow as the storm develops. Parents and students are urged to stay updated on closures and prepare for disruptions through the end of the week.

Winter Weather Forecast: Snow and Ice Ahead

As previously reported by Local Profile, widespread snowfall of 1–4 inches is expected from late Wednesday through Friday morning, with some areas in Collin County potentially receiving up to 6 inches. National Weather Service (NWS) Meteorologist Matt Stalley noted that efforts are ongoing to determine which locations will experience the heaviest snowfall.

In addition to the snow, gusty northwest winds and plummeting temperatures will result in wind chills dropping into the single digits and teens. These chilly conditions are expected to persist through Jan. 12. The wintry weather is highly likely to impact travel, with icy roads and hazardous driving conditions anticipated from Wednesday through Friday.

School Closures

As of publication, the following school districts have announced closures for the specified days. This article will be updated as more districts announce closures.

  • Plano ISD
    All Plano ISD schools and facilities will be closed on Jan. 9, 2025, due to the winter storm warning and anticipated hazardous conditions. An update regarding school operations for Jan. 10, will be provided Thursday evening after assessing facility and travel conditions. Learn more here.
     
  • Frisco ISD
    Due to forecasted inclement weather and poor road conditions, Frisco ISD canceled school for Jan. 9. A decision regarding the 10th has not been made. Learn more here.
     
  • Allen ISD
    Allen ISD campuses and offices will be closed on Thursday, January 9. Kids Club and all after-school activities are also canceled. The district will continue to monitor the weather and consult with local emergency officials before making a decision regarding operations for Jan.10. Learn more here.
  • McKinney ISD
    McKinney ISD will be closed on Jan. 9, due to impending weather. All school-related activities, including after-school programs, are canceled. The closure will be made up on April 28, 2025. A decision regarding Friday, January 10, will be made after monitoring weather conditions. Learn more here.  

It’s not just Collin County schools that are taking early action. For example, Richardson ISD schools and offices, including after-school programs, will be closed on Jan. 9 and 10. The closure on Thursday includes all games, activities and events. Depending on conditions, some high school athletic events scheduled for the evening of Jan. 10 may still take place.
