After severe storms in late May, the city of Plano started clearing debris from neighborhoods. After over a month of cleanup efforts, the first sweep is complete.

According to the city, crews collected over 90,000 cubic yards of storm debris from Plano neighborhoods. They have now commenced a second citywide sweep, focusing on gathering any remaining large piles with claw trucks.

Additionally, crews will clear alley and street collection points of accumulated yard debris bags and smaller debris piles using regular collection trucks. City crews will operate in their regular collection areas rather than working east-to-west in tandem with our hired contractors.

The city is utilizing a portion of its rainy day budget for cleanup efforts. As Local Profile previously reported, the city entered a $600,000 contract for the removal and cleanup. An initial $500,000 was allocated for cleanup efforts in parks, medians and trails, while an additional $100,000 was designated for supporting debris cleanup by the public works department.

“When so many trees have fallen or had their limbs ripped off in our 72 square miles, it is a daunting and challenging task to remove tons and tons of debris,” Mayor John B. Muns previously said in a letter to residents. “That’s why we’re asking for your patience and understanding. Please know, we have a large team of hundreds of dedicated city employees who are working diligently to remove your debris. It won’t be easy and it won’t be fast.”

Residents can continue to follow collection progress on the residential debris sweep map, which is updated daily. Orange represents the areas currently in the second sweep. This map is displayed on the plano.gov homepage.

Crews will resume weekly yard debris collections on your scheduled collection day once the second sweep is completed. We will notify residents when the second sweep is complete.
