The very first Neiman Marcus store opened in 1907 in downtown Dallas — and created a retail icon, with locations throughout the country, including at Plano’s Willow Bend. Although the flagship had been slated for closure, in an unexpected turn, the iconic downtown location will remain open through the 2025 holiday season as Saks Global explores new opportunities for the site.
This announcement follows months of uncertainty, stemming from a dispute with the building's landowners, descendants of Dallas pioneer C.C. Slaughter. City officials held discussions with Saks Global leadership to explore the potential of a new format that would serve the community while contributing to the revitalization of downtown Dallas.
What’s Going On With Neiman Marcus
In February, Saks Global announced plans to close the downtown store due to the dispute over the land where Neiman Marcus is located. However, civic leaders and city officials, recognizing the store’s long-standing role in the heart of Dallas, worked tirelessly to facilitate a resolution. This week, after a meeting with Saks leadership, city officials were able to negotiate an extension, giving the retailer a reprieve beyond the original March 31 closure deadline.

The discussions between Saks Global and the city of Dallas are centered around reimagining the space to align with the future needs of both customers and the community. Early proposals for the reimagined Neiman Marcus include a luxury retail experience, a curated art exhibition, and even a fashion and event center. There’s also the possibility of establishing an incubator for fashion design and manufacturing, bringing a creative, forward-thinking energy to downtown Dallas.
“We deeply admire the city's passion and unwavering dedication to Neiman Marcus’ storied legacy in Dallas,” said Saks Global CEO Marc Metrick in an official statement. “The potential reimagination of this iconic shopping destination reinforces Saks Global’s commitment to redefining the luxury shopping experience.”
What’s Next For The Store
Throughout the exploratory phase, Neiman Marcus' downtown Dallas location will continue to operate, including the beloved Zodiac Room and bridal salon. For locals and visitors alike, this extension offers a unique chance to experience the storied brand while its future is being shaped.
“We are excited that Saks Global has decided to keep Neiman Marcus open downtown, as we explore the opportunity to unlock the potential to transform downtown into an international beacon and economic engine for fashion — just as the Neiman Marcus founders intended when they opened the store more than 100 years ago,” said Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert. “We look forward to exploring what‘s on the horizon and are committed to continuing our conversations with the Saks Global team.”

As the city and Saks Global work together on this exciting project, one thing remains clear: Neiman Marcus will continue to be a cornerstone of Dallas, contributing to the city’s evolving fashion landscape and maintaining its integral place in the community for generations to come.
