Alice Kim, a student at Lizzie Nell Cundiff McClure Elementary in McKinney, was named the Texas winner in the 16th annual  Doodle for Google contest, according to the Facebook community, McKinney Texas Life

The art competition closed for entries on March 21, 2024, and invited students to express their "wishes for the next 25 years" through any artistic medium, including traditional materials, digital art, videos and even poems.

Each design needed to be accompanied by an entry form explaining the artwork's meaning. Winners were chosen based on artistic merit, originality and how well their work embodied the contest theme.

Inspired by her grandfather's love of beekeeping, Kim's Doodle aims to highlight the importance of bees for the environment. “I want to be a beekeeper because I want to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps,” wrote Kim in her submission, the quote displayed next to her design on the voting page. “His love for bees inspired me. He said bees are precious because they have a big impact on balancing the ecosystem. Bees may become extinct if we don’t take care of them.”

The national competition is now underway, with Kim's Doodle vying for the top prize — a chance to display her artwork on the Google homepage and a scholarship for herself. An additional $50,000 in supplies was awarded to McClure Elementary.

Public voting is open until June 5th, 2024, at 1:59 a.m. To vote for Kim's creation, visit the Doodle for Google website. Voters can find her entry by selecting "Grades 4-5" and "Texas."
