On Sept. 17, 2024, Frisco City Council approved a $182 million public-private partnership with FC Dallas to renovate Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. FC Dallas will partner with HKS Architects and Manhattan Construction Group on the project.
Set to begin in 2025, the renovation aims to elevate the guest experience by incorporating innovative designs, state-of-the-art audio/visual technology and a range of fan-focused amenities at Major League Soccer's third-oldest soccer-specific stadium, which has also hosted Frisco ISD athletic events since 2005.
“When Toyota Stadium opened in 2005, it was a state-of-the-art facility that was ahead of its time, and the stadium’s success has helped pave the way for dozens of other soccer-specific stadiums across the country,” FC Dallas Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in an official statement. “Today, we are delighted to announce these renovations which will modernize the stadium and elevate the fan experience, once again establishing Toyota Stadium as one of the premier facilities in Major League Soccer.”
The renovation features include the addition of three new clubs, revamped north, east and west entrances, as well as a striking roof structure designed to provide shade for guests across the venue. Construction will take place in phases, beginning on the east side of the stadium after the FCS Championship game on January 6, 2025. The west side will remain functional during the 2025 MLS season, with FC Dallas continuing to host MLS matches at Toyota Stadium throughout the renovation.
The project is also expected to boost seating capacity significantly, with a 175% increase in club seating, 58% in suite capacity and over 10% in overall stadium seating. Two new suite levels will provide varied seating options, and modern club spaces on both sides of the stadium will offer premium food and entertainment. Concessions will expand by 59%, ensuring faster service and a broader menu.
The renovation will include upgraded media facilities with advanced technology, improved accessibility for guests with physical differences and a 26% increase in restroom facilities for greater convenience. New audio-visual technology, including updated scoreboards and sound systems, will also enhance the game day experience. The proposed renovation includes a video board measuring 6,000 square feet, making it the largest in any Major League Soccer soccer-specific stadium.
“We are grateful to Clark and Dan Hunt for being part of an already successful public-private partnership that will span the next 30 years,” said Mayor Jeff Cheney in an official statement. “This stadium was built more than 20 years ago on an empty field which, at the time, seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. Today, Toyota Stadium is synonymous with championships, marquee events and youth development leagues not to mention being home to Major League Soccer’s FC Dallas. We embrace Toyota Stadium as an important part of our history, culture and economic success.”
The planned renovation will kick off in the first quarter of 2025 with construction on the east side of the stadium. By summer 2026, the east side will reopen as work shifts to the west side. The full renovation is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2028, with the entire stadium reopening at that time.
