13 North Texas Athletes Qualify For Paris Olympic

The U.S. Olympic Trials for Paris 2024 are now complete, and this year, 13 North Texans will be representing the United States. 

The Paris 2024 opening ceremony begins on July 26. Athletes will be highlighted as they travel along the River Seine in boats, concluding their journey at the Trocadéro.

Here are the athletes from North Texas:

Jaedyn Shaw — Frisco, Texas
Soccer
Shaw has been selected for the 18-player roster of the women's soccer team. She has rapidly emerged in U.S. soccer over the past year and will make her debut at a world championship with the USWNT at the senior level. Additionally, she is the youngest player on this Olympic team.

Hezly Rivera — Plano, Texas
Gymnastics
At just 16 years old, Rivera is the youngest member of Team USA. She clinched the all-around title in the junior division at the 2023 U.S. Championships. Her standout performances include placing fourth in uneven bars and fifth in balance beam at the same event.

Jordan Delacruz — Wylie, Texas
Weightlifting
Delacruz made her World Championships debut in 2018, finishing 13th, and improved to 9th in 2019. As a 1-time Olympian, she competed in the 49kg Women's category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Chiaka Ogbogu — Coppell, Texas
Volleyball
As a 1-time Olympian and Olympic gold medalist, Ogbogu competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where she won gold with the women's team. Ogbogu has also played professionally in Italy, Poland and Turkey.

Jasmine Moore — Grand Prairie, Texas
Track & Field
As a 1-time Olympian, she competed in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, finishing 23rd in the women’s triple jump. In the World Championships, her most recent participation was in 2023, where she placed 10th in the women’s long jump and 11th in the women’s triple jump. She participated in the women’s long jump and triple jump in both 2022 and 2023, with her top finish being 10th in the women’s long jump in 2023.

Sam Watson — Southlake, Texas
Sport Climbing  
Watson, who started climbing at the age of five, and now practices in Plano, Texas, secured his qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by winning gold at the Pan American Games. His personal best time in speed climbing is 5.02 seconds. 

Austen Smith — Keller, Texas
Shooting
Smith is participating in her second Olympics. In 2020, she was the youngest member of the USA Shooting team and placed tenth in Women's Skeet shooting.

Sha'Carri Richardson — Dallas, Texas
Track
Sha'Carri Richardson is an American sprinter specializing in the 100m and 200m events. She gained fame as a freshman at LSU, clocking 10.75 seconds in the 100m at the 2019 NCAA Championships. In 2021, she ran 10.72 seconds, becoming the sixth-fastest woman ever and fourth-fastest in U.S. history. At the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Richardson won gold in the 100m and 4x100m relay, and bronze in the 200m.

Scottie Scheffler — Dallas, Texas
Golf
Scheffler is currently ranked as the world's no. 1 golfer, and will compete for the U.S. in the Olympics. This year alone, he has had five victories on the PGA Tour, including his second career win at the Masters.

David Johnston — Dallas, Texas
Swimming
Johnston, a junior at UT Austin from Dallas, Texas, was a member of the 2021 NCAA National Championship team. He is an eight-time All-American in the 500 free, 1650 free and 400 IM. Johnston will compete in the 1500 free, with a current top time of 15:02.37.

Teal Cohen — Dallas, Texas
Rowing
Cohen’s most recent World Championships experience was in 2022, where she placed 12th in the women's four. Her career highlights include competing in the World Championships Under 23 in Racice in 2021 in both the women's eight and four, the World Championships Under 23 in Sarasota in 2019 in the Women's Four and the World Junior Championships in Trakai in 2017 in the Women's Eight.

John Joss — Corsicana, Texas
Para Shooting
After enlisting in 2004 and serving in Iraq, U.S. Army Sgt. John Joss joined the Army Marksmanship Unit, despite losing part of his right leg in a 2007 ambush. He competed in the 2015 USA Shooting National Championships final and finished sixth at the 2016 U.S. Paralympic Team Trials. Joss holds the national record in the R6-Mixed 50m Free Rifle Prone SH1. In 2018, he won a silver medal at the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in France and secured the first U.S. quota spot for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Conner Prince — Burleson, Texas
Shooting
Prince qualified for his first Olympic team and is coached by Vincent Hancock, a four-time Olympian and three-time Olympic gold medalist. His career highlights include competing in the Junior World Championships in Lonato in 2019 in both the skeet team mixed and skeet men events.
