First Look: Playmakers 88

The restaurant will host grand opening events on July 12 and 13

Nothing says Texas like a blue carpet in lieu of a red carpet. But this is the Cowboys, and walking into Playmakers 88, that legacy is evident.

Ahead of its grand opening on July 12, Playmakers 88 opened its doors for a VIP night. The evening was filled with many surprises and guests — such as Deion Sanders and Drew Pearson — who made their way through the crowd to take photos and chat with guests.

The night of surprises didn’t stop there. Actor and comedian Tommy Davidson took to the stage for a stand-up set ahead of his tour stops at Addison Improv this weekend.

The 7,000-square-foot space at 5005 State Highway 121, The Colony, features bar top, lounge and booth-style seating for over 250 people, with 50 flat-screen TVs, surround sound, upbeat music and a pool table. But the most iconic feature of the restaurant is the replica of the famous Ring of Honor, displaying images of Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Troy Aikman, famously known as "The Triplets."

Chef Rassuan “RJ” Johnson adds a unique flair to the menu by combining traditional family recipes with modern-day dishes. Southern comfort foods such as shrimp and catfish, served over a bed of creamy grits is a highlight.

“Truly a full circle moment, I have been enjoying the cuisines of Chef RJ for years, so to have him at the helm of our menu offering is truly an honor and a great treat for our guests,” Irvin previously said.

The curated cocktail menu also stands out for its themed drinks and big flavors, like the triplets spritz with Hendricks, St. Germain Elderflower, cucumber, mint, lime and prosecco. The star is another show-stopper with Lamarca Prosecco and cotton candy.

While guests settled in, Irvin thanked everyone for welcoming Playmakers 88 into the community. He also announced that a portion of the proceeds made throughout the weekend celebration will be donated to the Alzheimer's Association Greater Dallas. Irvin explained that his wife was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's, which she has suffered from for several years.

“Almost everyone in here knows someone dealing with this serious disease,” Irvin said to guests. “It’s an ugly disease.”

In celebration of its grand opening, Playmakers88 will host two exciting events. On July 12, 2024, from 5 p.m. to midnight, the community is invited to walk down the Playmakers88 blue carpet and enjoy live music, great food, cocktails, mingling and photo opportunities with Irvin. On July 13, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the festivities continue with a family-friendly afternoon of entertainment, giveaways, autographs and photo opportunities.

“I am truly honored to create an upscale sports bar and restaurant where sports fans can cheer on their favorite teams and athletes, while enjoying great food, cocktails and company,” said Irvin in an official statement. “My hope is that each person who visits Playmakers88 feels the excitement, energy and love that I have for the entire sports community and the overall DFW area.”
