And yes, the ambiance is wonderful

When a new restaurant is announced, there's excitement. (There always is!) And there's even more hype, perhaps, especially when it's a big glitzy restaurant with outposts in New York, Vegas and Miami Beach.

Catch Dallas was first announced last October. And yes, as mentioned, we were jazzed. Now, months later, we've finally been. And it's a beauty of a restaurant. But Catch's appeal is more than skin deep. There are some very interesting (and delicious) entries on the menu.

“Dallas has always been a great market for us and the city’s constantly growing culinary scene is amazing," Tilman Fertitta, Catch Hospitality Group partner, previously said in an official statement.

What Is Catch Dallas

Catch Dallas is a steak and seafood restaurant from Catch Hospitality Group, joining previous locations in New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami and Aspen.

What Do They Serve

Do you like seafood? Steaks? Cool vibes? Catch serves all three. The seafood is flown in from the Toyosu Market in Japan, the biggest fish market in the world. The steaks, served sliced except for the fillet, are sourced from across the country, including Buena Park, California, Dakota City, Nebraska and Greeley, Colorado.

What We Had

We had the truffle sashimi (with tuna, hamachi, chili ponzu, black truffle puree, kaluga caviar) and madai ceviche (Japanese red snapper, pickled peach, pomegranate and Amarillo sauce) — both of which were standouts. In particular, get the madai ceviche: the pickled peach, called "wakaume" in Japanese, is sweet and crisp, like a tiny, adorable apple, and the pomegranate not only adds more sweet acidity but also satisfying flavor bursts. The king salmon belly nigiri with truffle tomato and micro basil was a winner. The crispy cauliflower was aces, too. We also tried the truffle mushroom spaghetti, which was creamy, truffle-y, garlic-y and yummy.

We also tried the center-cut filet, an 8oz cut from Dakota City, but one of our favs was the miso glazed sea bass with jalapeno salsa, crispy leek and yuzu wasabi. And we ended the evening with “the carnival,” which was warm ricotta donuts, cream cheese frosting, raspberry lime, milk chocolate and salted caramel sauces.

For Those With Dietary Restrictions

When we sit down, we're told that Catch is "well-equipped" to handle dietary restrictions, and we are given a robust gluten-free menu to peruse. In the kitchen, we're told, there are separate fryers to avoid cross-contamination. We were also told that, as part of their continual training, staff is regularly quizzed about the menu, and what ingredients are used, so they can help guests navigate the menu — quite the task as Catch uses 84 house-made sauces in its dishes.

Catch is currently tweaking some of its signature dishes to open up the menu even more to guests with dietary restrictions.

How's The Ambience

Slick lacquered finishes. Curved panels. Brass. Plus curtains. A marble countertop bar. The dining room is brought together by a central tree installation, giving a whimsical feel to the 1930s Art Deco stylings. I love it.

Designed by the Rockwell Group, the award-winning architecture and design firm, this is easily one of the prettiest restaurants in the city. It's a wonderful place to sit and bask in beauty — and thanks to good, yet subtle, lighting, you can soak up all the extra design flourishes and easily see what's on your plate.

Where Is It

Located in Uptown's historic Maple Terrace development, Catch is right across the street from Nick & Sam's. From Legacy West, that could be a 25 to 40-minute drive, depending on traffic.
