One of the very first things I did after moving from Colorado was head to Haggard Library to get my hands on a Plano Public Library card. That tiny piece of plastic? It ended up being my golden ticket to devouring 116 books in 2024. But here's the kicker: the Plano Public Library system has been a treasured part of this community for way longer than I’ve been here — and probably longer than many of you, too.

For six decades, the Plano Public Library has been a cornerstone of connection, learning and growth in the community. Since its inception in 1965, the library has evolved from a single storefront location to a robust network of five branches, serving the diverse needs of Plano’s residents.

The Library’s Beginnings

The journey of Plano’s library system began when the Plano City Council approved the creation of a municipal library in 1965. Initially housed in a temporary downtown storefront, the library soon became a vital community resource. Maribelle M. Davis, the library’s first director and the namesake of Davis Library, served for 30 years, guiding the library with a visionary approach that shaped its expansion and impact.

Under her leadership, the library system grew to include multiple locations across Plano:

  • Harrington Library (1969)
  • Schimelpfenig Library (1980)
  • Haggard Library (1989)
  • Davis Library (1998)
  • Parr Library (2001)

Expanding Services with Outreach

In 2018, the library introduced its first outreach vehicle, the #morethanbooks "Big Blue" van, made possible by the Plano Library Friends, an organization that has supported the library since its founding. In 2024, a second vehicle, aptly named "Blue Two," was added, further enhancing the library's ability to engage with the community through events, classes and mobile resources.

Celebrate 60 Years of Service

As the library marks its 60th anniversary in 2025, a series of special programs and events will celebrate its legacy and community impact. The festivities begin with a mini-carnival at Davis Library on Saturday, January 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This family-friendly event will feature a two-person circus show, balloon artists, oversized games and more.

But if you can’t make it the library has many other events planned throughout the year:

  • Interactive Art Experience in April
  • Summer Reading Kick-off in June
  • STEAM-tober in October
