As the holiday lights dim and festive decorations come down, many North Texans are left pondering how best to dispose of their Christmas trees and decorations.

The cities of Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Prosper and Allen offer specific guidelines for the disposal and recycling of natural trees, ensuring that they are processed in an environmentally friendly manner.

Plano

Residents of Plano can drop off their Christmas trees from Dec. 26, 2024, to Jan. 2, 2025, at three designated parks: Old Shepard Place Park, Russell Creek Park and Schell Park. Each tree must be free of ornaments, lights and plastic materials; flocked trees cannot be recycled. Live trees dropped off will be transformed into mulch and compost, contributing to sustainable landscaping efforts. Notably, Plano will host a Community Recycling Event on Jan. 4 at First United Methodist Church, where residents can also recycle holiday lights. For more information, click here

Frisco

Frisco offers both curbside collection and a do-it-yourself disposal option for live Christmas trees. Between Dec. 26 and Jan. 27, 2025, residents can place their trees out on their scheduled trash collection day, ensuring they meet the guidelines of being under 5 feet or cut into smaller sections. Trees must be devoid of all decorations. Flocked trees are not accepted in the composting program, but residents may opt to schedule bulk pick-up via the Frisco Environmental Services for those items. Alternatively, the Environmental Collection Center will accept compliant trees during regular drop-off hours. For more information, click here
