During a Plano City Council meeting on June 24, 2024, council members approved an expenditure for the Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center renovation project.

The Tom Muehlenbeck Recreation Center, located at 5801 W Parker Road, will undergo a $15.9 million renovation project funded by the 2021 bond to enhance various aspects of the building, including the pool area and exercise rooms, addressing critical infrastructure needs. This project also includes essential maintenance that, if postponed, could lead to more costly repairs in the future, according to the city.

Based on the project team, fee amount, project approach and overall interview, city staff chose Lee Lewis Construction, Inc., as the construction manager at risk for the project. On Sept. 28, 2023, Lee Lewis Construction and the city entered into a pre-construction services agreement.

The renovation will include comprehensive building maintenance, HVAC and roofing replacements, landscaping upgrades, technology infrastructure updates, ADA compliance enhancements, and improvements to locker rooms, pool facilities and outdoor areas, ensuring the recreation center remains a vital community asset.

The project will be the recreation center’s largest renovation in 16 years. According to the city of Plano, since opening in 2007, the center has consistently been the city's most popular and heavily utilized recreation facility.

While the closure date has not been finalized, the city anticipates it will occur at the end of February 2025, following the completion of design work. Plano will keep members and residents informed, and updates can be found on this page.

In August 2024, the city will initiate the ordering of long lead time items such as HVAC units, new aquatics features and feature lighting, which are expected to arrive approximately nine months later. Construction is scheduled to commence from February 2025 and continue through to November 2025.
