The city of McKinney is gearing up for a significant transition this January 2025 as city departments relocate to the newly constructed City Hall at 401 E. Virginia St., just half a mile from the current location.

A recent update by the city of McKinney showed Assistant City Manager Barry Shelton touring the facilities and highlighting these features as key assets for both city operations and public use.

Designed to accommodate the city’s growing population, this state-of-the-art facility will centralize operations, replacing the current arrangement of nine leased buildings.

The relocation is part of a $50 million bond proposition approved by voters in 2019, aiming to enhance municipal services and create a community hub for the next generation. The building features expanded conference spaces, a multi-purpose event room and a larger City Council chamber, increasing citizen seating capacity from 85 to over 150.

Timeline For New City Hall

City services will operate on a staggered move-in schedule, causing brief temporary closures:

  • Jan. 8: Utility Billing closes for walk-in services.
  • Jan. 13-14: Animal Services, Code Compliance, and Health Compliance temporarily close.
  • Jan. 15-16: Building Inspections, Development Services, Engineering, and Planning departments pause walk-in operations.

Key reopening dates at the new City Hall include Utility Billing on Jan. 9 and all other services by Jan. 17. Online services will remain accessible throughout, ensuring no interruption in payments, applications, or service requests.

In the meantime, City Council meetings will continue at 222 N. Tennessee St. through January. Construction updates indicate the project is progressing smoothly, with the building opening to the public in February 2025.

The new City Hall’s adjacent plaza space is designed for community events and festivals, furthering its role as a central gathering place. “This is a great example of bond dollars at work,” Shelton said. “We’re excited to welcome citizens to this vibrant new facility.”
