Plano ISD Student Wins Second Place At 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee

Faizan Zaki is a sixth-grader from Rice Middle School

In a spellbinding display, Faizan Zaki, a sixth-grader from Rice Middle School in Plano, Texas, won second place at the 2024 Scripps National Spelling Bee. Held from May 28 to May 30, the competition showcased Zaki's exceptional talent and determination as he competed against 245 spellers across the United States, Canada, Germany, Guam, the Bahamas, Ghana, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

To reach the finals, Faizan correctly spelled "hellebore," "splenetic," "Adirondack," "samisen," "Braggadocio," "selvagee," "yawp," and "morlop" through eight intense rounds. He is one of eight students who advanced to the finals after Wednesday’s competition eliminated 140 of the country’s top spellers.

“This remarkable achievement marks Faizan's third appearance in the national bee, showcasing his dedication and passion for spelling,” reads a Facebook post shared by Plano ISD. He competed for the first time in 2019 when he was just 7 and tied for 21st place last year.

Zaki's impressive performance at the Dallas Regional Spelling Bee in March secured his spot to represent Rice Middle School and Plano ISD on the national stage. Overcoming tough competition through 18 intense rounds, Zaki clinched victory with the word "kurgan," showcasing his knowledge and composure under pressure.

“Plano ISD is bursting with pride for you, Faizan! Your hard work and perseverance are truly inspiring,” reads the Facebook post.
