The city of McKinney recently alerted residents to be cautious of vehicular burglaries during the holiday season.

“As you're out and about this holiday season, please remember that not everyone has your best interests at heart,” a statement from the city said. “Help safeguard your holiday cheer by taking any valuables out of your car, or hiding them from view and locking your vehicle. The less appealing your vehicle is, the more likely it is that thieves will move on to another target.”

On Nov. 20, 2023, Prosper Police Department announced the launch of its annual Holiday Crime Task Force with the goal of deterring, preventing and apprehending shoplifters and thieves during the season. The effort is conducted along with other North Texas departments including Little Elm, McKinney, Collin and Plano.

According to reports by the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), the holiday season sees an increase of 20% in robbery and personal theft crimes every year. According to Forbes Advisor, the National Retail Federation reported an increase in the number of retailers in America (73.1%) that feel organized retail crime was a higher priority in 2023 than in 2022 (70.7%).

Additionally, a survey conducted by Forbes Advisor found that 83-90% of small business retailers in the U.S. have experienced theft in their stores and 56% of small business owners expect thefts during the holiday season.

Recently, Local Profile reported that Plano police released a warning to residents that bank and ATM crimes are on the rise. Similarly, in 2022, Allen and Frisco police released safety tips and protocols to stay safe during the holiday season.

According to a post on Facebook by the Prosper Police Department, the Holiday Crime Task Force led to six arrests, three citations and the recovery of over $3,700 worth of stolen merchandise at the Gates of Prosper.

“I am proud of the men and women of our department and want to commend their work to protect our community,” said Chief Kowalski commending the departments’ efforts and the activation of the crime-preventing effort.

Here are some tips on how to stay safe during the season, shared by Allen police in 2022:
