An early-week cold front is increasingly likely to usher in much colder, below-normal temperatures for most of next week. We just don’t know yet how much colder the arctic air will be.

National Weather Service Predictions

After a very warm — and in some areas, record-breaking — start to the week, near or slightly below-normal temperatures are here to stay into the new year. Morning lows will dip into the 30s, with afternoon highs reaching the 50s. But starting next week, Arctic air will drop temperatures through North Texas.

“NOAA's Climate Prediction Center is monitoring the potential for an Arctic outbreak in the first full week of 2025,” NWS Public Affairs Specialist Erica Grow Cei told Local Profile.

As previously mentioned, just how cold temperatures can get is not yet known — or how long the cold will remain. But the freezing air last year brought temperatures down to single digits.

A Repeat of Last Year

Last January, North Texas also began the new year with an arctic blast. Temperatures dropped to the 20s with wind chill values in the single digits to low teens. In addition to the low temperatures, rain storms also moved through the region, cooling things even more.

Pipes freezing is the number one concern during these colder months, and if they are not properly prepared, damage is likely. But prepping pipes is not the only step homeowners should take ahead of a cold front. Visit Local Profile’s guide to home preparations ahead of freezes for more information.

In Texas, pet owners are usually more concerned about their animals overheating. But with freezing temperatures on the way, it’s crucial to learn how to protect your furry friends from the cold. Click the link here to learn how to keep your four-legged friends safe.
