The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently released details regarding a temple planned for construction in North Texas.

According to the church, the temple was originally announced as the Prosper Texas Temple by Church President Russell M. Nelson on October 2, 2022, but the temple's name was recently changed to the McKinney Texas Temple.

The McKinney Texas Temple will occupy an 8.16-acre site situated along Stacy Road, adjacent to and east of the existing meetinghouse, currently at 651 East Stacy Road in Fairview, Texas. The city's first temple architectural plans outline a multi-story temple encompassing approximately 44,000 square feet. Local Profile reached out to the church for a definitive address but did not receive a response prior to publishing.

No groundbreaking date for the temple was announced.

Beyond the McKinney Texas Temple, the state of Texas is home to seven other temples either currently operational, under construction or in the planning stages. These include the temples in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Lubbock, San Antonio and McAllen.

Situated in the south-central region of the United States, Texas received its initial visit from missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ in 1843. In 1898, approximately 300 Church members established a settlement on land acquired by the Church in northeast Texas, eventually becoming the colony of Kelsey.

In recent decades, the number of church-goers in Texas has grown rapidly. According to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the number of Latter-day Saints surged from over 132,000 in 1985 to slightly surpassing 210,000 in 2000. Presently, Texas boasts a membership exceeding 378,000 across nearly 750 congregations.
