Embracing an alcohol-free lifestyle, particularly during initiatives like Dry January, doesn’t mean sacrificing nights out with family and friends. This month offers a fresh start, allowing people to step back from alcohol while exploring new experiences.

Dry January originated in the UK in 2013 as a public health initiative by the non-profit Alcohol Change UK. Since then, it has evolved into a global movement, with over 8.8 million participants joining in 2023 alone.

Local Profile recently interviewed Haywire Training & Development Manager Keena Hanson on completing a successful Dry January and why it’s so popular this time of year.

Why is Dry January so popular?

People like to start the new year fresh and reset from the previous year. December is often a time of celebration and overindulgence, and some enjoy following it up with the challenge of restraint in January.

What is the most difficult part of Dry January?

Alcohol is so ingrained in our society that it can be challenging to navigate social situations without it. The cultural expectation to drink can make abstaining feel more difficult.

What are some positive effects of Dry January?

It’s empowering to try something new and succeed. Dry January can provide a confidence boost for those who take on the challenge, and it often comes with additional benefits like improved sleep, better focus and you may even lose a few pounds.

Do you believe there has been an increase in “sober curiosity?”

100%. More people are exploring sobriety, whether it’s a permanent lifestyle change or just a short-term experiment. There’s a growing curiosity about what life feels like without alcohol, and many are also exploring alternatives like THC, CBD and low-proof options.

How do mocktails help people stick to their goals?

Mocktails offer a way to participate in social settings without the effects of alcohol. They help remove the social stigma often associated with sobriety by giving people something that looks and feels like a cocktail. It’s a way to enjoy gatherings at bars or restaurants without constantly being asked why you’re not drinking.

What is the easiest way to create a great mocktail?

Start with a juice or two that you love, add a puree and finish with an interesting simple syrup to tie the flavors together.

What are some mocktails Haywire can make for guests?

  • Hibiscus haze: Hibiscus, prickly pear, lemon, simple syrup, Lady Bird Tonic
  • Lady Bird: Grapefruit, pineapple, cranberry, guava, Lady Bird Grapefruit Soda
  • Mojito refresher: Lemon, pineapple, cucumber, mint, agave, ginger ale

Can you share your favorite mocktail recipe?

My favorite mocktail is the Lady Bird! Here’s the recipe:

- 1.5 oz grapefruit juice
- 1 oz pineapple juice
- 1 oz cranberry juice
- 0.75 oz agave simple syrup
- 2 bar spoons of guava puree

Shake all the ingredients together, strain into a glass, and top with about 1.5 oz of Lady Bird Grapefruit Soda.
