Chef Tiffany Derry, a proud Texan and the powerhouse behind Roots Chicken Shak at Legacy Hall in Plano, is stepping into the national spotlight once again. Fox officially announced that Derry will join Gordon Ramsay and Joe Bastianich as a judge on Season 15 of MasterChef, premiering this summer.
Derry, a James Beard Award-nominated chef and television regular, will bring her signature Southern flair and no-nonsense style to the “Dynamic Duos” season — a new twist that pairs contestants in teams of two, ranging from siblings to exes, as they compete for the MasterChef trophy and a $250,000 grand prize.
A Texas Voice at the Table

While Derry’s name is already familiar to fans of shows like Top Chef, Bobby’s Triple Threat and The Great American Recipe, North Texans also know her as the chef behind Roots Chicken Shak, located at Legacy Hall in Plano, and Roots Southern Table in Farmers Branch. Her food is bold, heartfelt and deeply rooted in her upbringing — and now it’s going national.
“Cooking has always been about passion, precision and heart,” Derry said in an official statement. “I’m beyond excited to bring my perspective to the table alongside Gordon and Joe.”
What’s New in Season 15?
For the first time in MasterChef history, the competition will center around pairs of home cooks, adding new layers of teamwork, tension and creativity. Expect everything from couples to best friends navigating tough challenges — including the return of the high-stress pressure test.
According to Fox, the revamped format and Derry’s presence aim to bring a “fresh, expert perspective” to the long-running series. It’s also a big win for North Texas, as one of its own takes a place at the head of the kitchen.
More Than Just TV
Derry’s career began in the kitchen at 15, and she hasn’t stopped cooking — or advocating — since. When she’s not judging contestants on national television or running her restaurants, she works to promote food equity and sustainability, even lobbying for healthy food policy in Washington.
With Season 15 of MasterChef premiering this summer on Fox and streaming on Hulu, viewers in Collin County and beyond will see Derry add her signature spice to the show — just don’t expect her to go easy on anyone.
