Foodies and food critics alike are gearing up for the first Michelin Guide Texas selection to be unveiled later this year, showcasing culinary gems in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston and San Antonio.

But each of these cities will be putting up significant funds for the next three years, according to the Dallas Business Journal (via WFAA) Bringing Michelin to Texas will cost approximately $900,000. The state's tourism board will cover half of this amount, with the remaining $450,000 being divided among the five major metro areas featured in the guide. Visit Dallas alone committed $90,000 annually as its "participation fee," contributing to the overall cost of hosting Michelin in the state.

“Visit Dallas is very excited about the guide and its impact on Texas’ culinary scene,” Visit Dallas Director of Communications Zane Harrington told Local Profile. “The anonymous inspectors are always evaluating exciting new destinations around the world for the guide. Texas has been on the radar recently due to the quality of the culinary scene and the density of restaurants in each of the cities.”

According to Michelin, Texas boasts award-winning barbecue, locally sourced seafood and steaks and savory Tex-Mex, among other culinary delights. The state's vibrant and sophisticated gastronomic scene highlights culinary talents deeply rooted in Texas culture and influenced by international cuisines from around the world.

“The Texas culinary scene has proven to be an exhilarating one, with multicultural influences, homegrown ingredients and talent that is rich in ambition,” International Director of the Michelin Guides Gwendal Poullennec previously said in an official statement. “Foodies and travel enthusiasts alike will find something to enjoy, with such a broad dining scene spanning farm-to-table dishes, fusion cuisine, upscale dining and the famous Texas-style barbecue. Texas is a perfect fit for the Michelin Guide, based on the experiences of our anonymous Inspectors.”

Anonymous Michelin Guide inspectors will bestow the prestigious Michelin stars — one, two or three — for exceptional culinary excellence. The guide is also renowned for its Bib Gourmand selection, which showcases restaurants offering outstanding food at a great value. The Michelin Green Star honors establishments that excel in sustainable gastronomy. Additionally, the inspectors highlight recommended restaurants and present special professional awards.

Currently, Michelin's anonymous inspectors are out in the field, making undercover dining reservations and paying for all their meals to guarantee they receive the same experience as any other customer.
