In the wake of a recent positive test for West Nile virus in The Colony, mosquito control measures are scheduled for Sept. 8 and 9, weather permitting.

The affected area includes Taylor Street Park, with treatment extending north of North Colony Boulevard, south of Squires Drive and Dooley Drive, east of the electric transmission line easement and west of Northpointe, Bill Allen Memorial Park and the railroad tracks.

The city will conduct a truck-mounted mosquito treatment in the designated areas, beginning at approximately 9 p.m. each night. Residents near the treatment zone are advised to keep people and pets indoors and cover ponds or pet bowls during the process. If inclement weather delays the treatment, it will be rescheduled for the following night.

According to the statement, the city will continue its proactive efforts to mitigate mosquito-borne illnesses by conducting regular trapping and testing of mosquito populations. In addition to public efforts, officials are encouraging residents to take personal precautions by following the "Four Ds":

  • Dress to protect: Wear long sleeves and long pants.
  • Dusk, Daytime and Dawn: Protect yourself against mosquitoes anytime that you are outside.
  • Defend: Wear insect repellent with DEET, Picaridin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus or an effective alternative.
  • Drain standing water: Eliminate any water that stands for longer than 5 days or treat water with larvicide according to the label.

Other North Texas cities are also addressing mosquito pools testing positive for West Nile Virus. As previously reported by Local Profile, McKinney recently conducted mosquito control spraying on Sept. 5, 2024, covering a one-mile radius around Barnsley Drive. Nearby cities like Frisco initiated similar measures in response to the rising number of West Nile Virus cases across the region.
