The American Red Cross will honor six residents with lifesaving awards for their heroic actions during a medical emergency in Plano. Among those being recognized are four lifeguards from the Carpenter Park Recreation Center, retired Plano police chief Greg Rushin and his wife, Cindy Rushin.

The incident occurred when a 63-year-old man collapsed while exercising on a leg extension machine at the recreation center. Greg and Cindy Rushin, who were nearby, immediately sprang into action — performing CPR as a bystander alerted the center’s staff.
Within moments, four lifeguards arrived from the facility’s indoor pool area to assist. Taking over CPR efforts, the lifeguards quickly applied an automated external defibrillator (AED). Thanks to their swift response, the man regained consciousness, began breathing independently and his pulse was confirmed. Emergency medical services arrived shortly after to continue his care.
According to the city, this incident is a testament to the extensive training and dedication of Plano’s recreation staff, who undergo regular CPR and first aid training through the American Red Cross. Their preparation and readiness to act at a moment’s notice exemplify their commitment to providing a safe environment for the community.
The lifesaving awards presentation will take place on Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. at Carpenter Park Recreation Center, located at 6701 Coit Road in Plano. This ceremony will celebrate the heroic efforts that helped save a life and underscore the importance of life-saving training and preparedness.
The Red Cross Lifesaving Award is given to recognize a lifesaving act performed by an individual who utilized skills learned through Red Cross health and safety training.
