Several North Texas schools were recently named National Blue Ribbons winners by the Department of Education.

The award, presented by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, highlights schools that excel in academic performance or make significant strides in closing achievement gaps among students. This year, 356 schools were honored nationally.

In North Texas, Saint Mark the Evangelist Catholic School in Plano, Grapevine-Colleyville Collegiate Academy at Tarrant County College Northeast, Dave Blair Elementary School in Farmers Branch, Whitewright Middle School and St. Philip's School and Community Center in Dallas were awarded the Blue Ribbon.

“The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools,” said Cardona in an official statement. “The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation’s students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child.”

According to the Department of Education, awardees come from a diverse range of schools but share common characteristics. National Blue Ribbon Schools are led by visionary leaders who set high standards and prioritize instructional excellence. They implement effective teaching practices and emphasize continuous professional development for their staff. A key feature of these schools is data-driven instruction, paired with a strong commitment to ensuring the success of every student. Collaboration between families, communities and educators is vital to their achievements.

Displaying the National Blue Ribbon School award flag at a school’s entrance or on a flagpole is a widely recognized symbol of outstanding teaching and learning. These schools serve as national models of effective and innovative educational practices.
