The Plano Police Department recently announced a remarkable achievement: a significant decrease in crime across the city, reaching levels not seen since 1993, when the department began tracking data.

This milestone raises an important question: how does the department intend to sustain and build upon this success, particularly as Plano’s population continues to grow at a rapid pace?

The Ways Advanced Technology Helps Police

The Plano Police Department told Local Profile that by emphasizing collaboration, the department actively works with neighboring law enforcement agencies and state and federal partners to share resources, intelligence and expertise, creating a unified and effective front against crime.

A cornerstone of these efforts is the department’s real-time information center (RTIC), which serves as a critical hub for data analysis and threat assessment. The RTIC collects and processes real-time information to identify emerging threats and support officers in the field. By providing timely intelligence to patrol officers and detectives responding to in-progress calls, the center enhances situational awareness and strengthens the department’s ability to address public safety concerns efficiently.

“Utilizing advanced technology, RTIC enhances the department's ability to monitor and respond to incidents swiftly and effectively,” Plano police told Local Profile.

Plano Police Remain Proactive

As the community grows, new challenges arise, such as greater demands on law enforcement, shifting crime trends and the ongoing need to foster trust and collaboration with the public. To ensure the safety of an expanding population, the department emphasizes continued community involvement. Public education initiatives will play a key role in informing residents about safety practices and crime prevention, empowering them to take an active role in maintaining a secure environment.

“By engaging with residents through neighborhood watch programs and community events such as National Night Out, the department builds trust and fosters a sense of shared responsibility,” a spokesperson for the police department said.

Law enforcement officer training is regularly updated to provide the latest skills and knowledge, ensuring they can respond to diverse situations with professionalism and empathy. Proactive strategies — including targeted neighborhood patrols, problem-oriented policing programs and community outreach — aim to address potential issues before they escalate.

The department's crime analysis unit also identifies crime trends and patterns, allowing for strategic resource allocation and a proactive approach to crime prevention for now and in the years to come.
