With students from Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and Richardson ISD, Capital One set a Guinness World Record by hosting the most participants to complete an online financial literacy lesson within 24 hours.

On Sept. 24, 2024, Capital One hosted 450 students for a world record challenge. Community members were also encouraged to participate in the record attempt virtually by taking the Khan Academy course, supported by Capital One, from anywhere, at any time during the 24-hour challenge window. Between students and the public, Capital One saw a total of 1,812. participants.

“Financial literacy can help build the foundation for financial security, both for individuals and families—which can lead to more vibrant communities,” said Capital One President of Financial Services Sanjiv Yajnik. “I am thrilled that we set a new world record, and am grateful to our associates, their family and friends, our community partners and our customers who completed the challenge. Most importantly, I’m excited that we were able to spread the word about the importance of financial literacy and bring awareness to Khan Academy’s free lessons through this initiative.”

The event included speeches from Senator Angela Paxton, Representative Mihaela Plesa and Dallas Mavericks player PJ Washington, highlighting the importance of financial literacy.

“We need more events like this to make sure that people are getting the education they need,” Rep. Plesa said during the event. “I need your help to make this vision a reality. We need to advocate for financial literacy in our schools. We need to talk to our teachers, parents and friends. We need to share this excitement about learning how to manage our money and the importance of making informed financial choices. So together, we can create financial liberty and literacy to celebrate and be wealthy.”

The financial literacy course from Khan Academy is a free, self-paced, 30-minute program that covers essential topics such as budgeting and saving, purchasing a car and paying for college. After completing the course, participants received a downloadable certificate and a redemption code for a complimentary beverage at a Capital One Café.
