Soon after opening its doors in August 2023, Walnut Grove High School in Prosper went viral after pictures and videos of its massive state-of-the-art facilities and mall-style food court were shared on social media. Not even 6 months later, the school’s cheer team is bringing the school back into the spotlight with an incredible achievement.

Only a couple of weeks after their first win at UIL States, the Wildcats cheer team, aptly called The Standard, performed their final routine on Jan. 21, 2024, and patiently waited for the awards announcement that same night.
“I have never been more proud of a performance or a group of girls, they left it all out on the mat,” Walnut Grove’s Head Cheer Coach Destine Grobe told NBCDFW.
And the girls’ passion shone through as they were announced as Gran National Champions, out-performing teams from all over the country, in their very first (less than a) year. “Most teams it takes years and years and years to achieve this and we did it in five months,” added Grobe.
Before coaching the squad at Walnut Grove, Coach Grobe worked at Rogers Middle School, so when she was offered the role at the new high school, she was excited to coach her former students. “Knowing I would get to be back with so many of my former cheerleaders, I immediately jumped at the opportunity when it was given to me!” Grobe told Wildcats Wired.
In addition to training a new group of cheerleaders in the school’s first year, Grobe was also working with another challenge — girls were coming from different schools at Prosper ISD all with their own way of doing things. “Everyone came in with their own idea of how our program should work,” said Grobe. The challenge was creating a unique program, a new standard.
“I want us to be more than just cheerleaders, I want us to be ambassadors for our school and community,” said Grobe. Mission accomplished!
