North Texas Performing Arts is revolutionizing the stage experience with NTPA Immersive Theatre, an electrifying new initiative that breaks the fourth wall and pulls audiences straight into the story. Forget passive viewing — here, you become part of the action.
Unlike traditional theater, this experience dissolves the boundary between spectator and performer, transforming audience members into participants in a dynamic, multi-sensory storytelling environment.
Creating The New Theater
At the helm of NTPA Immersive Theatre is Melissa Winton, an industry veteran with extensive experience in immersive storytelling. With a background in practical effects, scenic design and interactive performance, Winton specializes in crafting emotionally engaging and physically immersive experiences
“This program is game-changing for the North Texas arts scene,” Winton told Local Profile. “While the region is already rich with exceptional theatre, music and dance, immersive theatre brings something fresh and experiential — melding live performance, interactive storytelling, and cutting-edge scenic design into a completely new way to experience the arts.
This style of theater bridges the gap between traditional performing arts and modern audiences seeking a more interactive experience. “We’re creating a destination theatre experience — one that will put North Texas on the map for immersive storytelling,” Winton said.
What Shows To Expect

The first production under this new venture, Black Hollow: The Final Verdict, will transport guests into the shadowy world of a 17th-century trial where every word and decision could alter the course of events. Through interactive characters, elaborate sets and environmental storytelling, participants will navigate a haunting narrative where secrets lurk around every corner and their choices shape the outcome.
“We are launching a full season of five productions in 2025, and are planning for the immersive theatre to be part of our regular rotation of great educational and entertainment experiences in the years to come,” NTPA CEO Darrell Rodenbaugh told Local Profile. “ We envision this growing regionally beyond our Plano location into our other theatres, and are already thinking about bigger collaborations and larger-scale productions in our 2026 season.”
NTPA Immersive Theatre 2025 Season:
- April 17-20: Black Hollow: The Final Verdict - Step into the trial. Speak carefully. Trust no one.
- August 14-17: Ever After: A Grimm Fairy Tale - Once upon a time is just the beginning.

NTPA Gets Bigger And Better
The launch of NTPA Immersive Theatre builds on the organization’s recent advancements in accessible and inclusive arts programming, including NTPA Deaf Theatre, NTPA Starcatchers for disabled participants, and the expansion of NTPA Film Studios. The immersive initiative will feature a diverse slate of productions, catering to audiences of all ages with family-friendly adventures, cultural narratives and psychological thrillers.
Get Involved With The Arts
The best way to participate in this dynamic program is to join the experience firsthand. Immersive theatre demands a distinctive combination of acting, improvisation and audience engagement.
For those who enjoy storytelling and interactive performance, this opportunity offers a chance to embrace a role in a completely new way. In its inaugural year, the program will welcome both youth and adult performers, fostering a creative and imaginative environment that brings people together through shared experiences.
