In Texas, an estimated 14,620 residents will be diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016.

Free to Breathe, a nonprofit lung cancer research and advocacy organization dedicated to ensuring surviving lung cancer is the expectation—not the exception—will be holding its 6th annual 5k Run/Walk on Sunday, May 15, 2016. The event will also include a 1-mile walk, a rally, food, live music and fun for the whole family and will take place at Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve in Plano.

The theme of the event is “Heroes,” reflecting that every person is a hero when they help fight cancer. Each participant who raises donations will receive a cape to wear on race day, proudly showcasing their will to fight lung cancer. All proceeds from the event will directly support Free to Breathe’s fight against lung cancer.

Since 2005, Free to Breathe has raised more than $14 million for research and educational programs. This year, the organization will be funding two new lung cancer research grants totaling over $1.2 million dollars.

Last year, community members, teams, and companies across the region supported the Dallas/Fort Worth Free to Breathe 5k Run/Walk by raising $252,000. Event chairs hope to surpass that total this year.

Free to Breath is dedicated to doubling lung cancer survival by 2022.
