Texans now own over 300,000 registered electric vehicles. These figures are anticipated to keep rising as Texas expands its network of public fast-charging stations, supported by more than $400 million in federal funding.

According to DFW Clean Cities, the Texas Electric Transportation Resources Alliance credits the surge in electric vehicle sales to their low operating costs, increasing affordability and the appeal of cutting-edge technology. In the past thirteen months, Texans have leased or purchased over 100,000 EVs, significantly boosting the total number of EVs registered in the state since last June.

“The best news about Texas reaching 300,000 registered EVs is that the rate of EV adoption has increased at a rate of almost 50% per year,”  Interim Executive Director of TxETRA Buzz Smith said in an official statement. “At that rate, we expect to see twice as many EVs in Texas just twenty months from today. Texans are discovering the convenience, performance and advanced technology in today’s EVs and are happily taking advantage of the EVolution of transportation.”

Most electric vehicle owners reside in North Texas, with 36.57% of the vehicles registered in the region. Following D-FW, is Houston with 25.1%. The most popular electric vehicles in the state are the Tesla Model Y and the Tesla Model 3.

The Texas Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan, released in September 2023, is set to create a statewide charging network, with stations spaced at least every 50 miles along designated major interstate highways and 70 miles apart on other highways. The first two public fast-charging stations, located in Gainesville and Cotulla, are expected to open in the next few months, with seven additional stations scheduled to launch in late 2024 and early 2025.

"Electric vehicles are significantly elevating the living standards, environmental health, financial wellness and overall viability of Texas,” said Board Chair of TxETRA Andrew Higgins. “In just one year, we've seen a remarkable increase in EV adoption, surpassing the milestone of 300,000 EVs on Texas roads. This growth clearly signals a bright future for electrification. EVs offer greater efficiency, cleaner energy and superior performance. The internal combustion engine has taken Texas on an incredible journey over the past 120 years. It is electric vehicles that will drive us forward for the next century."
