Frisco police are warning Collin County residents of a new scam involving police impersonators.

According to the police department, phone scammers are calling and pretending to be with the Frisco Police Department or other local law enforcement, saying they have a subpoena or warrant, and asking the call recipient to take care of it with a prepaid gift card.

Police reminded residents to never give out personal information over the phone or email if they do not know the caller, or to give out any payment information.

If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of a call, the Frisco Police Department asks for residents to call them directly.

Remember: no government agency will ask for Bitcoin payment, wire transfers or gift cards. If you are being asked to make these types of payments, hang up, search for the number and call the police to verify. Do not call the numbers listed on the text messages, as those are often part of the scam.

Local Profile previously reported that the Collin County Sheriff’s Office announced a suspect was arrested for allegedly impersonating police and scamming a resident out of approximately $5,000 in February 2024.

Following a November 2023 incident, the special operations unit of the Collin County Sheriff's Office, working in conjunction with the Houston County Sheriff's Office in Alabama, arrested a woman implicated in a scam aimed at a resident of Collin County.

"We're determined to catch and punish those who try to take advantage of our citizens,” Sheriff Skinner said at the time. “This suspect thought they could use the trusted name of law enforcement to target innocent people. But we showed last Wednesday that we'll find them, no matter where they try to hide."
