Late morning light streams into the restaurant. It's early September — National Bourbon Month. And what a place to celebrate.
This is the first Whiskey Cake. It all started here, right here in Plano, and since has expanded across the state, into Oklahoma and Florida. The idea was simple but overdue: a killer, super serious whiskey list, plus delicious food.
On the wall are bourbon barrel lids signed by folks like Fred Noe of Beam Distilling. Folks from Whiskey Cake visit distilleries and hand-select casks, which are then exclusive bottlings. So, when I say serious whiskey list, I mean it. The "good book," as the list is called, features over 300 whiskies, including private and exclusive bottlings, and is updated on a regular basis. Plus, Whiskey Cake will do customized flights, allowing you to taste rarities.
Even if Whiskey Cake didn't serve food, it would be a great bourbon bar. Thing is, the food is really good, too.
For National Bourbon Month, Whiskey Cake is teaming up with Garrison Brothers for a barrel-aged old fashioned. It also offers an Old Forester bourbon flight, a liquid tour of the 1870, 1897, 1910 and 1920 labels. It’s like time-traveling through bourbon history. All this is great, sure, but Whiskey Cake has bourbon 101 classes at Plano and Las Colinas locations — spirited ways to learn about the drink.
As I sip the 1920 label Old Forester and take a bite of carrot cake pancakes, I really cannot think of a better place in Collin County to celebrate National Bourbon Month.
