Mary Jo Wright, MD, FACS
Dr. Mary Jo Wright is a board-certified breast surgical oncologist and plastic surgeon specializing in breast reconstruction. She brings extensive training and clinical experience to this distinguished group of surgeons sought worldwide for their revolutionary techniques.
Dr. Wright received her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in Tennessee and went on to receive her medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in Missouri. She continued her education, completing an internship and residency in general surgery at Louisiana State University (LSU) Medical Center in New Orleans, during which she was named Most Outstanding Resident several times. Following this, Dr. Wright completed three fellowship trainings: Trauma/critical care at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, breast cancer surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York, and plastic and reconstructive surgery at Tulane University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans.
In 2003, Dr. Wright served in the United States Army Reserve during Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom and served as Commander of the 1st Forward Surgical Team in Iraq. In 2009, she served as Chief of Surgery of the 945th Forward Surgery Team while on active duty in the United States Army. Dr. Wright resigned from the military with the rank of colonel.
Following her military service, Dr. Wright served as Medical Director of both the SICU and Breast Cancer Center at the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans, Director of Tulane Hospital SICU and Chief of the Breast Surgery Service at Tulane University Hospital in New Orleans, Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Director and Associate Professor of Surgery at Tulane University Health Sciences Center, and Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief of Breast Surgery at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She also worked in private practice in El Paso, Texas, and Anchorage, Alaska.
Dr. Wright has been published in 15 medical journals, including Journal of Clinical Oncology and Journal of Trauma. Additionally, she has published several educational modules and papers and presented at national and international meetings.
Dr. Wright is a member of 16 medical and scientific societies, including the American College of Surgeons in which she held numerous positions and was named Young Surgeon Representative at the Louisiana chapter, and James D. Rives Surgical Society in which she served as president. The other organizations include American Association for Surgery of Trauma, American Society of Breast Surgeons, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Associate of Women’s Surgeons, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and Society of Surgical Oncologists. Dr. Wright also served as Associate Examiner for the American Board of Surgery Certifying Oral Examination in Dallas and Birmingham, Alabama.
In 2003, Dr. Wright received a Bronze Star Medal and five honorary military coins from the United States Army for her meritorious service. In 2007, Dr. Wright received the American Cancer Society Spirit Award.
