According to newly released U.S. Census data, the city of Plano experienced significant demographic changes over the past five years, with its population becoming notably more diverse.
On Dec. 12, the U.S. Census Bureau unveiled the dataset for 2023, part of the comprehensive American Community Survey (ACS). This release offers a detailed snapshot of population trends and demographic shifts across the nation, covering the years 2019 to 2023.
Demographic Changes
In Plano, the majority of residents, about 53.2%, identify as white, making it the largest racial group in the city. However, this demographic has experienced a notable decline over the past several years, with more than 4,000 fewer white residents reported between 2018 and 2023. This shift underscores a broader trend of increasing diversity in the city’s population.
Growth In Diversity
At the same time, Plano's Asian population has seen substantial growth, solidifying its position as the city’s second-largest racial group. Between 2018 and 2023, the number of Asian residents in Plano rose by nearly 8,000, reflecting significant demographic changes that contribute to the city's evolving cultural landscape.
Plano's demographic makeup also shows 9% of its population identifying as Black, 0.4% as American Indian and Alaska Native. Additionally, individuals identifying as two or more races account for 10.9%. Hispanic or Latino residents comprise 16.2% of the city's population.
