TxDOT Team Brings Snow Plows To North Texas

As winter snow hits Collin County, TxDOT crews are working to ensure roads remain clear and passable, sending crews to North Texas.

Over 1,700 TxDOT employees have stepped up to battle the freezing temperatures across the state, preparing for the winter storm. By Jan. 7, these crews applied over 1.3 million gallons of brine — a mixture of salt and water used to prevent ice from forming — on Texas roadways.

How TxDOT Prepared For The Winter Storm

TxDOT began pre-treating roads as early as Sunday, with employees working in 12-hour shifts to combat the storm's effects. Out of the agency's 25 districts, 23 had pretreated roads with brine by Tuesday morning. The remaining districts have equipment and personnel on standby to assist where needed.

Despite these efforts, snowy and icy conditions may still pose risks to drivers, even on pretreated roads. TxDOT urges Texans to stay home if possible. For those who must travel, allow extra time to reach your destination, drive cautiously and maintain a safe distance from TxDOT vehicles as they work.

To bolster efforts in North Texas, TxDOT teams from other regions joined forces. On Jan. 8, a 12-member team from Corpus Christi headed to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, bringing additional brine trucks and salt spreaders to aid in de-icing operations. Later that evening, a 14-member crew from Amarillo arrived with six snow plows, ready to support 24/7 monitoring and pretreatment efforts in the Metroplex. Additional crews from Laredo, Pharr and other parts of Texas are also en route to assist.

Where To Check The Road Conditions

If you are planning on leaving your house, be sure to check TxDOT’s map with road conditions updated throughout the day. The map will show everything from snow and ice to car accidents and road closures.
