Seven North Texas Cities Among Safest, Most Affordable In U.S.

Selecting a family-friendly place to live in a big city is a major decision that requires balancing safety and affordability. A recent study named seven cities across North Texas the safest and most affordable places to live in the U.S. — McKinney, Frisco, Grand Prairie, Plano, Carrollton, Richardson and Denton.

According to the study by GoBankingRates, McKinney and Frisco secured the 15th and 16th spots nationally, thanks to their low property and violent crime rates, along with a high median household income.

In McKinney, the median household income is estimated to be $113,286 with an average mortgage cost of $3,153 and total monthly living expenses of $5,129. Crime is also relatively low with  2,163 property crimes and 238 violent crimes annually.

Similarly, Frisco holds a median household income of $144,567 with a $4,137 average mortgage cost and $6,128 monthly cost of living. The city has approximately 2,928 property crimes and 225 violent crimes annually.

Grand Prairie (21), Plano (22), and Carrollton (23) all ranked within the top 25. Meanwhile, Richardson (26) and Denton (31) placed in the lower half of the study.

With a median household income of $76,626, Grand Prairie households face an average mortgage cost of $1,961, resulting in a total monthly cost of living of $3,996. The city records 3,770 property crimes and 405 violent crimes annually.

In Plano, residents have a median household income of $105,679, the average mortgage cost for households is $3,217, contributing to a total monthly cost of living of $5,266. The city experiences 5,496 property crimes and 458 violent crimes annually.

The study ranked the largest U.S. cities by population based on their average cost of living and crime rates. Crime rates were calculated using data from the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer for 2022, the most recent year available. The rates reflect the number of crimes per 1,000 city residents.
