The McKinney Fire Department (MFD) recently announced it has once again received Insurance Services Office (ISO) Class 1 status. The ISO is used to measure the quality and effectiveness of fire protection in a community. This rating may have a direct bearing on the cost of property insurance for homes and commercial buildings.
“The ISO 1 Classification puts McKinney in an elite group of fire departments,” said McKinney Fire Chief Paul Dow. “It takes hard work to attain and then maintain the certification, but it is important to show our commitment to providing the highest level of protection and emergency services to the community.”
Nationwide, only 498 fire departments have been awarded an ISO Class 1 rating, with just 74 fire departments in Texas. The classification can lead to lower insurance costs for residents and businesses.
The McKinney Fire Department first received ISO 1 status in 2014. The status is reevaluated every 5 years.
ISO classifies communities on a scale of 1 to 10 with a focus on three major areas: Fire department, including staffing, equipment, training and emergency response capabilities; the water supply system specifically used for fire suppression; and the fire alarm and communications system.
