Collin County residents woke up to winter weather this morning as sleet began falling around 7 a.m., followed by snow about 45 minutes later. In response, cities are implementing several measures to ensure public safety and minimize disruptions.
Plano
- Road Safety
City sanding trucks have been deployed focusing on major intersections, bridges, city facility parking lots and emergency locations like hospitals, police stations and fire stations. Plano uses a sand and salt mixture to improve traction and melt ice. Residential streets will not be sanded unless emergency vehicles require access. As Local Profile previously reported, Plano does not have a snowplow operation but will use heavy equipment to push snow aside if accumulation becomes problematic. Residents are urged to avoid driving during icy conditions. If travel is necessary, reduce speed and exercise caution, especially on bridges and overpasses, which freeze quickly. Plano currently does not pre-treat roads with brine due to rare snow events but is exploring its use for future preparedness.
Update 1/9/25 2 p.m. While the snow has stopped in some areas of Plano, rain is now falling. The layering of snow and rain is likely to cause additional ice. Take appropriate precautions when leaving the house.
