The city of Dallas was named one of 16 host cities for FIFA World Cup 2026, but as “Sports City USA,” Frisco is getting ready to play its own role in the World Cup.
During a Frisco City Council work session on Nov. 7, 2023, officials discussed downtown projects including construction on Main Street and 4th Street Plaza, which is expected to begin in April 2024 and end in April 2026. Construction on a new downtown parking garage is also slated to begin in August 2024 and end in July 2025.
The revitalization also includes new features focused on pedestrians such as outdoor seating areas, fire pits, a performance stage, enhanced medians and additional crosswalks.
However, the plaza project is estimated to be over budget — current estimations land the project at about a $21 million cost with a $16 million budget, and it was recommended to nix proposed water features. The Main Street project was estimated to be within budget.
Local Profile previously reported that AT&T Stadium — home to the Dallas Cowboys — is also planning major renovations worth upwards of $295 million.
Among the renovations, the Arlington-based stadium will be looking to complete ahead of the World Cup includes refreshing the stadium's premium spaces and upgrading the technology and back-end services.
Arlington Mayor Jim Ross is working with city leaders and the Dallas Sports Commission, an organization that helps to attract major sporting events to the Dallas area, to plan for the future soccer event.
The renovations will not drastically alter the overall look or feel of the sports venue but rather will go towards refreshing the stadium's premium spaces that are due for lease renewals. The funds will also go to upgrading AT&T Stadium's technology and other behind-the-scenes services.
One of the preparations includes the opening of the 800-room Loews Arlington Hotel that will be located between the AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field.
The city of Frisco scheduled an open house for 2:30-6:30 p.m. Dec. 7, 2023, at the Frisco Chamber of Commerce offices (6843 Main St.) for residents to receive additional information.
