Although H-E-B is widely regarded as one of the most iconic and beloved grocery store chains in Texas, Dallas has only recently begun to experience the grocery giant’s presence. Despite the company's long history and dominance in the state, the city of Dallas has yet to have a single location, while neighboring regions like Collin County have seen multiple H-E-B stores spring up in recent years.
This delayed expansion into Dallas is now changing, as the city prepares to welcome its very first H-E-B, marking a significant milestone for both the retailer and local shoppers.
H-E-B Makes Waves In Collin County
H-E-B has rapidly expanded its presence across Collin County, marking a significant retail takeover in recent years. H-E-B has been expanding since its founding in 1905, but North Texas didn’t see its first location until 2022.
“Frisco was first,” Public Affairs Managing Director for H-E-B and Central Market Mabrie Jackson told Local Profile. “We had to start somewhere.”
The company’s expansion began with the opening of the Frisco location at the northeast corner of Legacy Drive and Main Street in September 2022. Shortly after, Plano saw its own H-E-B location at the southwest corner of Preston Road and Spring Creek Parkway, opening in November 2022.
In 2023, the company continued its growth, with new stores opening in Allen at 575 E. Exchange Parkway in October and McKinney at the northeast corner of Custer Road and Eldorado Parkway in July. Frisco also welcomed a second location at Hwy 380 and FM 423 in August 2024.
Looking ahead, H-E-B plans to continue its expansion with stores slated for Melissa, at the northeast corner of US 75 and Highway 121, which broke ground in January 2024, and Prosper, at the southeast corner of Frontier Parkway and the Dallas North Tollway, which broke ground in April 2024.
Heading To Dallas
H-E-B is making bold strides in its expansion across North Texas, now unveiling plans to establish its very first store within the city of Dallas. The Texas-based grocery giant has acquired nearly 10 acres of prime property at the southeast corner of Hillcrest Road and LBJ Freeway, nestled inside the Dallas loop.
“While we have a lot of work to do, we look forward to connecting with our neighbors, the city and community stakeholders to ensure we create a destination that best supports this community,” said Jackson. “This is the first step in a long process, and we hope to share more details with our neighbors soon.”
With the purchase finalized, H-E-B is gearing up to collaborate with local residents and city officials to navigate rezoning and fine-tune its preliminary vision for the site. This marks a significant milestone in the retailer's journey to bring its renowned shopping experience to the heart of Dallas.
“We are pleased with the overwhelming reception from our customers at all of our stores,” Jackson told Local Profile. “We look forward to serving more customers across North Texas in the future.
H-E-B is far from new to the Dallas area. Its upscale Central Market brand already boasts three locations in the city, with plans underway for a fourth in the Uptown neighborhood.
What Makes H-E-B So Great
H-E-B stands out for its impressive size and variety. The North Texas locations offer over 900 types of produce alone. They also feature a wide selection of traditional, craft and Texas beers, as well as being Texas' largest wine retailer, with sampling stations available. Known for affordable organic and gluten-free options, H-E-B also offers its exclusive True Texas BBQ, complete with a drive-thru and full restaurant experience. But you haven’t officially tried H-E-B’s options until you’ve eaten the fresh butter tortillas. Believe me — they will change your life.
