It was nice while it lasted, but this warmer weather is about to end. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), another arctic blast will hit North Texas tonight, Jan. 18, 2024. The NWS forecast expects temperatures to drop to the 20s with wind chill values in the single digits to low teens.
In addition to the low temperatures, rain is expected to return on Sunday and continue throughout next week. If you haven’t yet, get all your sensitive plants inside, or follow our guide on how to protect them from cold weather, because there is a 20% chance of freezing rain falling in some parts of North Texas from Sunday night to Monday morning.
Pipes and pets are not out of the frying pan either, so make sure to prepare your home from freeze and to check on your pets when you take them for a walk.
The NWS also reminded residents to check on at-risk populations, including newborns, the elderly, people suffering from chronic illnesses and outdoor workers. Additionally, homeless people are some of the most at-risk residents during these weather events. Several warming shelters opened last week in North Texas.
In Collin County, an overnight warming shelter station opened on Jan. 14, 2024, with a capacity of 115 people at 4700 14th St, Plano while the Salvation Army opened shelters at the Plano Corps Community Center at 3528 14th St., Plano and the McKinney Corps Community Center at 600 Wilson Creek Pkwy, McKinney.
However, there is a ray of sunshine to cling to — while temperatures will continue to be low, each afternoon temperatures will rise above freezing, reaching the mid-upper 30s on Saturday and Sunday.
