Wylie Junior High School Awarded For Excellence In STEM Education

Wylie ISD recently announced that Cooper Junior High School was awarded $8,000 as one of only ten recipients of the newly established Middle School Principal Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Award.

Sponsored by Region 10 ESC, Communities Foundation of Texas, Educate Texas and North Texas STEM professionals, this award recognizes principals and schools that lead the way in promoting excellence in STEM education. Region 10 Board Member Eric Reeves presented the honor at the campus on Nov. 8, 2024.

Cooper Junior High School Principal Leslie Dodson surprised STEM teacher Micah Rice and his class with the announcement of the award.

“Mr. Rice creates magic and truly sets the standard in his STEM classroom,” Dodson said in an official statement. “He transforms students into critical thinkers, collaborators and problem solvers. This award will further the greatness that he's able to accomplish in the STEM program at Cooper.”

Rice plans to use the $8,000 grant to further enhance the school’s STEM program, creating new opportunities for current and future students.

“The impact of High STEPS and Mr. Reeves’s generosity will resonate throughout my school and community as we work to cultivate the next generation of innovators and problem solvers,” Rice said in an official statement. “The next great STEM program to reach Cooper Junior High School is a drone program. We intend to reach new heights!”
