Documentary film Goonga Pehelwan: The story of a deaf wrestler

Deaf Wrestler

Indie Meme presents a multi-award winning film Goonga Pehelwan at the Angelika Film Center in Plano on Thursday, September 15.

The documentary creates a visibility of the life and struggles of Virender Singh, one of India’s most accomplished deaf athletes.

The Deaf Wrestler film was made over a 13-month period and asks tough questions to India’s sporting bureaucracy. Inside the ring, Virender is in total control and rarely loses the fights he enters, but outside of the ring are where his biggest challenges lie. Watch his journey as he overcomes the obstacles life throws at him—eventually, making real-life wins.

Following the 46 minute film will be a SKYPE session with the filmmaker & wrestler Virender.

This South Asian film is set in India, yet the documentary is still universal in its appeal with English subtitles for everyone to easily follow.

Virender was recently awarded the prestigious 2016 Arjuna Award in recognition of his ‘outstanding achievement in National Sports.’ Since 2005, he has won multiple awards including two gold medals on global stages at events such as the Deafolympics and World Deaf Wrestling Championship.
