Christmas is a time of year when families gather and often recall great memories from previous get-togethers. Unfortunately, for most, a loved one who has past away is often missed.

In January 2007, Rick and Melanie Allen, opened Allen Family Funeral Options (AFFO) based in Plano, Texas. Their business’ motto is “A different concept in caring” which is evident by the flexibility and control given to the families they serve. This same motto was made apparent when they realized and acted upon the need to console and encourage families during the holiday season who have lost a loved one.

Every family served within the first year of business became more of a friend than a professional client, even though Rick and Melanie had never met them before walking through their doors. They wanted to do something special to get the families through this difficult time of year. The First Annual Refelction of the Seasons was held in December of 2007 with about 20 people in attendance at Plano Centre’s Northbrook room where it has continued to take place.

Rememberance services typically consist of special music, a message from a local minister, a candle lighting ceremony and an acknowledgement by reading the name of the deceased family members of those present. Light refreshments are always served and ocassionally small gifts are given. Over the course of the nine years the event has taken place, AFFO has a had individual soloists, harpists, a string quartet and a vocal group from a local church come brighten the room with joyous sounds and songs.

This free event is open to anyone who has had a loss, whether AFFO was originally involved in the service or not. Attendance has grown over the years and most often 60-80 people come to remember someone from the past. Some who attended the first year have continued to return each December.

One thing every person is sure to take away is a smile. For all are always very grateful and leave in higher spirits than when they arrived.
