Following a 9-3 high school football season with the McKinney Lions, head football coach Marcus Shavers announced his resignation after six seasons at the school.
On Dec. 15, 2023, McKinney High School released Shavers’ resignation statement on X (formerly Twitter). “This was not an easy decision for me and my family,” said Shavers in the statement. “But after much thought and consideration, I have decided to explore and pursue new coaching opportunities.”

According to The Dallas Morning News, Shavers was hired by the district in 2018, after two seasons as head coach at Lubbock Estacado and is leaving with a record of 38-30 in his six seasons at the school. Since he took over the football program, the Lions went from 10 seasons under .500 to making four playoff appearances in six seasons, with the 9-3 2023 season being Shavers’ best win total in the team.
In addition to closing the 2023 high school football season on a high note, this senior season class includes five top recruits including cornerback Xavier Filsaime (Florida commit), running back Bryan Jackson committed to USC, linebacker Makhi Frazier committed to Michigan State, linebacker Jonathan Agumadu committed to Oklahoma State and cornerback Ashton McShane committed to Boston College.
In late August 2023, Shavers deleted his X account after a video shared on social media prompted McKinney ISD to put the coach on paid administrative leave while the district conducted an investigation. The video showed Shavers hand-rolling a cigarette which led people to question its content. After a week on leave, Shavers was reinstated with the district releasing a statement saying that there was no evidence to support illegal conduct.
“Shavers was cooperative throughout the entire process,” said McKinney ISD’s statement (via Texas Football.) “Shavers voluntarily submitted to a drug test and the result was negative. He also voluntarily agreed to monthly random drug testing going forward.”
Local Profile reached out to the district for comment on Shavers’ resignation but did not receive a response prior to publishing.
According to WFAA, McKinney ISD is looking to hire a new head football coach in January 2024.
